On Sunday at a ceremony in Los Angeles, the 2012 Grammys will be announced amidst protest by musicians whose categories have been dropped from the awards. Only 78 Grammys will be awarded this year, down from 109 in 2011. Looking at the full list of Grammy Award categories from last year, side-by-side with this year's categories, I made some notes on the changes. (See below.)
Some observers have noticed that independent music labels are being shoved aside in favor of big corporate labels in this re-defining of the categories. Others see a disturbing racial bias. Roberto Lovato of Presente.org, a group asking for a rollback of the old categories, spoke to the L.A. Times. “We support the issues of these musicians and see this as a civil rights issue,” Lovato said. “The message is clear: Reinstate the 31 categories now and stop discriminating against black, Latino, Native American and Hawaiian communities.”
Another organization opposed to the Grammy changes, Grammy Watch, has posted a Grammy Debacle Timeline. It shows the chronology of the controversy and notes the backlash against jazz greats Herbie Hancock and Esperanza Spalding, when they won Grammys over the non-jazz frontrunners in some major Grammy categories.
The San Jose Mercury News ran an editorial today by John Santos, "Elimination of categories robs Grammys of diversity and creativity."
On top of it all, NARAS [National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences] has the gall to announce the induction of Big Bill Broonzy, Sergio Mendes' Brasil '66, and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. into the Grammy Hall of Fame at the same time that it is cutting down the blues categories, eliminating Latin jazz (Sergio's 1966 group would not be eligible with this year's eliminations), cutting down gospel and R&B, and eliminating contemporary jazz.
In my notes below, if a Grammy category remained unchanged I skipped over it and did not mention it. Here's my best shot at understanding the cuts. Please feel free to comment if my reading of the changes can be improved.

Best Classical Vocal Performance has been eliminated, but there is a new category called Best Classical Vocal Solo. Is that a name change only, or does the new language reflect some substance? Best Choral Performance remains unchanged. These classical changes are especially confusing.
